Freaking out!

79 pounds of carbon and steel.A delayed update and new race report!

I’m totally freaking out about the trip (that I am now on, no turning back). I crammed all these wheels into my bike box and now it weighs 79 pounds. When Pete dropped me off yesterday morning; the woman at the check in counter informed me that it should be an extra $50 overweight charge + if I was traveling overseas an extra $350! She did not charge me “this time”, now I have to figure out how to drop 10 pounds out of my bike box before I try to fly to Brussels!

I ran in to Adam Mcgrath on our layover in DC. He’s got a broken collarbone after a collision with a leashless dog and is NOT racing nationals. If you thought he was cute before; picture him with his arm in a sling and a big jacket over it. He has had the shittiest luck this season. Ask about his UCI license suspension when you see him wandering around this week.

Yikes!

Nathan Trombly picked me up at the airport in Rhode Island. Rhode Island is f’ing cold. Like 10 degrees. I am staying at Trombles’ house for the entire week! I’ve got a room to myself and he is shuttling me around in his car! Ran in to Adam Myerson at the race and we are making arrangements to get me to the airport in a couple Monday’s for my flight to BRU.

I don’t have a credit card. I can not rent a car in Belgium. I am freaking out about that right now too.Trying on Puma pants.

A: how am I going to fit all my shit in the bike boxes I have and not pay extra baggage fees .

B: what am I going to do once I land in the Zaventem airport?

I just finished the W.E. Stedman GP in 14th place. I’ll spare the race report for a more interesting race but, I will say that my legs are coming back and I did better than I expected. This is all training for Belgium. I don’t expect much beyond a steady ride at nationals next weekend. I still have the Caster’s GP tomorrow and I think I can improve on my result today.

After the race Myerson asks me “why are we going to Belgium anyways?”. (I finished 10 seconds down on him and Dan Neyens after relentlessly attacking our little group over and over again for a couple laps) He has been racing for 20 years. I’m halfway through my 2nd season on a geared bike in the Elites. Like I said, my legs are coming around after this solid week of “racing as training” I’ll be ready to battle it out for 45th place.79 pounds of carbon.

When I got my call-up; Richard Fries said (in booming announcer voice) “racing for Vanilla bicycles, the CONSISTENT! MOLLY CAMERON!”

I told him later that it was very polite of him.

When you have zero talent, being consistent is about all you’ve got!

  4. Molly,
“Zero talent?” C’mon, don’t be so modest. Don’t be so hard on yourself.

Congratulations on your 12th place today in the Caster’s race. I’m sure you saw that Trebon got 10th in the Superprestige today–that’s pretty exciting too.

Anyway–as for your luggage. Send your ‘C’ wheels back to PDX? Or what if you transfer a bunch of components to your checked luggage, but keep the 3 wheelsets. You could remove 2 cranksets, 4 pedals, two seatposts, two saddles, and um, maybe your chains too? How much do you think that would drop? It’d probably get you close anyway.

As for nationals–last year you nailed your prediction of Todd Wells. What’s your call for next weekend?

Best of luck with everything Molly!

  5. Yep, you got the math about how I got it. Cranks, pedals, posts, saddles and shifters too, I should be in business.

I know, the wheels are over the top.

One set is on loan from Chris King company for the trip.

    Thanks King!
