USGP of Cyclocross #1 – brief report

Everyone is feeling this last week of racing and travel. Starcrossed, Rad Racing + Vegas and now Wisconsin. Lots of travel, lost luggage, rerouted flights, the standard misc BS that comes with chasing cyclocross around the country.

mollycxvegas09joesalesI should probably start back in Vegas. I rode my eyes out. Had a pretty decent race though the results don’t show it. I’m stoked on my Vegas ride, I turned myself inside out. And that was beautiful.

The Embrocation Cycling Journal afterparty was insane. My lady got herself in trouble as usual. I packed my bikes, showered and rolled down to stay up and party till pretty late. See my flickr photos for evidence.

I hopped right onto a plane to fly out to the USGP of Cyclocross in Wisconsin. I hooked up with the “my wife inc.” crew and we got my bikes built up and took a nice spin on Friday around Milwaukee. The race venue was an hour away and after the drive out I got to preview the course before a thunderstorm rolled in on us. It is pretty warm and muggy. Nothing like Vegas but, in the 70′s. I was hoping for rain but, no luck.

The race today was fast and tacky. A great course, lots of elevation changes, lots of all-out pedaling sections, a forced run up all on mostly intact grass fields.

I felt good yesterday but, I could tell warming up on the course today I was not feeling it. The race started pretty fast and I did not have a whole lot to give so, I backed off a little to recover. I was within a few seconds of the group that made up the 10-15 spots but, I was just dying trying to stay on it. Hulick was up in there for the first part of the race and guys started popping off the pace about midway through. I felt like I was having to muscle my way through it. Standing up way too much on stuff I could normally sit and pedal over.

I was on my own and cramping pretty good when Troy Wells rolled past, I rode with him for a bit and then had to sit up and recover for a sec. Damn! The guy chasing me caught back up to me and we rode it in to the finish. I was dying on the little run up, he gapped me off and I had no gas to put in a chase.

Some times I am on, and sometimes I am off!

Hulick and Skerritt from Vanilla finished up pretty close together, Mark Blackwelder and Playman were out visiting family and they got some racing in too. The fans in Wisco are pretty awesome, there was not a section of the course I was not getting heckled, yelled at or cheered on!

And then I got a post race interview!
