Cross Crusade # 1 - Alpenrose!

Well, I am clearly failing in my goal to win every Oregon cyclocross race I enter.

But I am leading the BAR apparently.

So let’s break it down: Barry Wicks and Ryan Trebon were in attendance. Ryan on his single speed. I was pretty worked up and nervous about the race!

::list of excuses begins here::
Pulled out of my pedals at the start (which never happens to me).
Rode up into the chase and just did not have it to stick in it.
Chased the KONA train solo for a few laps.
Backed up a little and lost a spot to a charging Shannon.
My brake cable fell out, so I stopped, got off my bike in the velodrome and fixed it. (also never happened before)
Almost ate shit hammering over some bumpyness on the backside (yo! I know a few of you saw that move I pulled! Shit was CRAZY!)
Felt like I was getting time back on Shannon in the last lap but, all for naught.

I’m disappointed with 6th. But, I guess it aint so bad for feeling so bad.

“waaah, I had no legs!” I texted my lady friend after the race. “oh don’t take it so hard, when are you ever happy with your races? you ALWAYS complain about no legs.” she says. Fair enough.

I’m waiting on the results to see who else was in attendance. Hulick was chasing me pretty hard, I’m pretty sure he smelled blood, I was suffering. My favorite Ian Brown was in the top ten, Steven Hunter in the top 15? Apparently Cary Miller stuck it to Steven pretty good.

(I’d like to take a second to point out that Katie Compton won the Treviso world cup today, boo yah!)

Also, check out this vid of Page eating shit! Ouch, pretty brutal move by TJ.

So, I’m not sure how I feel about lapping so many riders. My lungs are sore from hollering “passing on your left” dozens of times, not 3 laps in to the race. It just can’t be fun for the elite ladies to be getting lapped by the dudes during their race.

Comment on this, especially if you were an elite lady getting lapped. Everyone is really civil when we are on the course (and I want to maintain my “most polite passing rider” status) but, there were too many close calls and too many times where lapped riders were forced to ease off the gas a little to let us pass. I don’t like making other racers back off so I can move through.

Anyways, how do you think it was working out? I could not even tell who was in the lead of the women’s race!

I was cx eyed the whole time today. whew!

Thanks so much everyone who was out hollering and supporting, I feel like I let you all down! I rode the run up once in practice and I really wanted to do it during the race but, I was too gassed.

And, sorry about that start Ben, I got bumped hard off my line and I know I fully cut you off.

Big thanks to my sponsors, namely Shimano in a big way. They are out in force this year and you should check out their tent at the next CX Crusade. They are providing neutral support in the pits and in their tent. Take them up on a little bike love. I am riding the shit out of their carbon tubular wheels and even won a few races on the Dura Ace tubeless wheels.

I’m heading off to Ohio on Tuesday for the triple UCI race weekend, hoping I’ll have better legs than today, legs like I had up in Starcrossed or at Vegas would be nice. 3 days of racing? I’ll either be f’ing stoked or burned the hell out!

  1. Molly! I was SO bummed not to be able to stick around to see your race yesterday (My ride there and back had a tight schedule so I had to leave pretty much as soon as my race was done). But I had a fabulous time and I can’t wait for my next ‘cross race. (I’ll stick around next time.)
Have fun in the midwest and of course we expect a full report with color commentary upon your return. Whoo-hoo!

  2. Molly! You’re going to kill it in your three day racing spree. Also, you looked great out there yesterday. Listen to your lady friend - she’s really smart (not to mention supah hott!)

  4. Molly! (I had to start it with that to keep it alive) Holy crap, you ruled yesterday. You, by far, had the loudest group of fans on the run up. It was insane. Portland loves you. CX loves you. Good luck in Ohio!

  6. Molly, can you give us an update on the new jersey designs. Have not figured the flags out, but they look cool. Thx.

  7. Molly,
I was one of those unfortunate souls who was completely off their game and thereby lapped by just about everyone, including myself somehow. I definitely seemed more crowded out there, but Alpenrose always does due to the corners and the sheer number of people. I can’t speak for the rest of us slow pokes, but I have no problem moving over or slowing and letting faster riders past. Almost everyone who passed was polite, clear and concise in how they needed to get around. I figure the field size was like the parking situation and will get figured out pretty well and pretty soon.
