Why travel to Vegas?

Redundent yes but, I am copying these last 2 from my comments section. Joel and I chatted about it briefly in the Stumptown coffee shop the other morning. Portland (read: the entire west coast) is too far away to draw the larger, well funded cx teams right now.

Fidea, Sunweb, Rabobank and co. are not going to be excited to fly 9+ hours out to the east coast for one World cup. They have to do it though. You can not just skip a WC.

Vegas? Maybe. There is a lot of hype about it, and I am all for it. But I am going to be amazed if anyone besides Nys and Vervecken come over for the Vegas cx. Too far, too expensive. You must remember these guys have RVs with their faces on them, 2 bikes in each pit and 3 mechanics in each pit too. They do not travel more than an hour for most races all season long. There has be a huge fiscal incentive for them to come over.

Maybe though… just maybe. Those guys race for the $. And if they are getting any less than the 5000 Euro or so they are accustomed to start a race and then risk getting sick and tired from travel. Well, Vegas does have a lot of money. Maybe Wellens will come over, it will make for a good episode of “Wellens and we”.

Parbo points out below, in 5 years, the US CX scene should be exciting. If USAcycling does not fuck it up. We need to build on the recent cx success and keep up the momentum. You can count the number of potential international US cx stars on one hand. And all of them are limited by their road team contracts which are the bread and butter they survive on. (they do cx in the “offseason” and the road training and camps start up in January, smack in the middle of the cx worlds race period) USAcycling did little more than give Jon Page a skinsuit to race Worlds in. (please correct me if I am way off on that one) The “cx camp” seems like it is one man’s passion for cx that is loosely tied in to the USAcycling structure. At this point, if you are interested in pursuing a cx career, it is totally DIY.

Not to hate on the USAC but, I am a critic at heart. I realize that they have a limited budget and a lot of other talent and bases to cover.

Again, hats off to Page for fully committing himself to his dream. So working class. So tough.

In the long run, Katie and Jon and Danny getting podium results at worlds this year almost means more to the US racing scene than to them personally. The top US professionals now have something to aspire to. It IS possible to be competitive in Euro cx. Whether you live there or not. I was not around when Lemond won the first of his World champs and Tour de Frances. But he opened doors and look at the Euro ProTour peloton now!

More US riders than ever! A US rider on almost every team! Maybe in ten years cx will be saturated as well.

  2. the ball is big time in our court now. weve had riders show it can be done, but only with big time effort, and, in the case of page, total devotion to the euro cross scene.

    im excited to see if this brings about a change in us cx course design, doubly so because this next season will be my first season back in the thick of things in a good 6 or 7 years, and im hoping for a return to the total abject misery that made me fall in love with cx in santa cruz in the late 80s.

    but excitements the key word. maybe thisll mean more us cx races after nationals, instead of the season ending just as things get good. hopefully the us fans who are going over to cx worlds in larger numbers will come back and tell their local course designers that were not prepping our riders nearly well enough to be able to handle the constant onslaught of obstacles that is the euro circuit… the elements are all there - all thats needed is to cram more of them in.

    as much as id love to see it, itll take a set of multiple wc races in the states to get more than just a rider or two out to the west coast - and i dont see that happenning quite yet…

  4. We don’t need the Euro Cross Elite to race at CrossVegas. If they come that would be great. It will still be a great event because the depth of talent currently availbale domestically will provide the type of show are expecting. CG

  5. The US WC will be in Providence (70% sure). Cyclingnews.com has a report about it in the cross roundup section yesterday or today. Nijs is chartering a jet and bringing the top 25 over.

  6. Oh yeah, there’s also Cross Vegas coinciding with Interbike. I think they hope some Euro Pros make the trip to support their sponsors and race. Dunno how that’ll turn out.

  7. Hmmm. Thought I posted comments yesterday. As I said then, cyclingnews.com had a piece in their ‘cross notes about the US WC race. The weekend is Oct. 6/7 and the location is 70% for sure Providence, RI. Nijs is said to be chartering a jet to bring over the top 25 guys. Trebon says that Providence is too fast for the Euro guys or they’ll end in a bunch sprint.

  8. Yep, we all read cyclingnews stuff. One World cup race is one thing but, the point is really that it is not economically viable for the top Euro talent to travel out of central Europe.

    And, I agree with CG. I would rather see (and race) a domesticly talented Vegas race than go just to get stomped by Nys or Vervecken. The US riders are hott and getting hotter!

    Maybe they will put sprinklers on the course to get some “mud” in Vegas.
