Prepping for her world’s trip to Europe, Deidre Winfield raced against the masters and then the A-field back-to-back at Cobblestone Cross outside Richmond in early January. My penultimate lap in the masters race was the hardest of my life as I scrambled to avoid being lapped by her. She’d already ridden the leaders off her wheel. These cross women are fast.

yeah, Rachel, my favorite so far in racing the men’s categories last year was this yelled from the sideline: “Hurry up ___________ or you’re going to get beat by a girl!” I don’t think they realized they were inspiring the wrong rider.

My “favorite” part of riding cross in the men’s races was getting empty compliments from guys afterwards. I don’t know for sure, but I have a feeling many of them had no clue who I was or had ever watched me race in the women’s category. It was nice for them to go out of their way to compliment me but I felt like their judgement was based on the fact that they were a MAN and I had beat them. I didn’t see them complimenting the other 15 people that rolled over the line in front of them. Maybe I’m overly sensitive. Regardless if it was because they were chasing the ponytail in front of them, (which seemed to be more of a target!) the men’s races were SO much more agressive than what I was used to and provided a lot of valuable experience.

Hell yeah! Got to start somewhere. Cat 3 racing is still pretty tough, they keep attacking and attacking, don’t have the sense yet to just chill out and ride tempo.

All I can say is wow. She rox it so hard and that’s my plan for the season. Not race with the elites of course, but to be competitive in the men’s cat 3-4. There’s not many women racers here in the midwest and to get better I need to be fighting not to get my butt completely kicked.
